YouTube

Kindergarten Social Studies Standard 2: (Citizenship): Students will recognize their roles and responsibilities of being a good Citizen.
Objective 3: Invesigate and explain how symbols and songs can help unite families and classrooms.
  • Identify school systems and traditions (e.g., mascot, song, events).
  • Recognize state and national symbols (e.g., state and national flags, bald eagle, seagull, Statue of Liberty).
  • Learn and sing state and U.S. patriotic songs.
  • Identify the people and events honored in Utah and U.S. commemorative holidays.
  • Know the words and meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance.
  • Identify the rules and etiquette of citizenship (e.g. stand for the flag, hand over heart).
Ed Tech Standard 8- Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

ISTE- Empowered Learner- I use technology to set goals, work towards achieving them and demonstrate my learning.

I made a Playlist on YouTube of songs appropriate for Kindergartners and even some 1st graders. A lot of the songs can be used for Opening/Morning Calendar or Circle time. I liked finding songs that would teach the kids the months of the year and the days of the week, and some moving around songs to get some wiggles out.   the Patriotic songs were fun and I like the idea of having a portion of the morning meeting focused on learning the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem. I would definitely use YouTube as a resource in my classroom. I feel like kids love videos and songs and they are able to catch and keep their attention longer, especially at this young age.

1st Grade Fine Arts: Visual Arts: Strand: Create Standard 1- Engage collaboratively in exploration and imaginative play with art materials and use observation and investigation in preparation for making works of art.

ISTE: Creative Communicator- I communicate effectively and express myself creatively using different tools, styles, formats, and digital media.

This was a fun presentation to make and brainstorm some different ways to make art.  I feel like this would be a fun way to brainstorm as a class and keep things organized on a smart board.  I would definitely use this program in my classroom, I think this would be a fun resource to introduce the children to technology and get them used to doing some assignments with technology.

Emaze

2nd Grade Science Standard 1: The Processes of Science, Communication of Science, and the Nature of Science. Students will be able to apply scientific processes, communicate scientific ideas effectively, and understand the nature of science.
Objective 1- Generating Evidence: Using the processes of scientific investigation (i.e. framing questions, designing investigations, conducting investigations, collecting data, drawing conclusions).

Ed Tech Standard 6- Use telecommunications efficiently and effectively to access remote information and communicate with others in support of direct and independent learning and for pursuit of personal interests.

ISTE- Global Collaborator- I strive to broaden my perspective, understand others, and work efficiently in teams using digital tools.

I made a presentation on Emaze, and I really like the website and program. I made a presentation about water and the water cycle. I felt like with this presentation and maybe a hands on object lesson, this standard would be met and the kids would enjoy it enough to remember what they are being taught. I would definitely use Emaze in my classroom, it is very easy and it makes the presentations fun for the kids.  This would be a fun tool for the students to use in small groups or teams to teach their classmates about things we are learning in class.

ThingLink

3rd grade Health Standard 7: Consumer and Community Health- Objective 3
Summarize the role of health services in the community.
  • List various health services.
  • Define the role of each service.
  • Identify situations in which the health services can or should be accessed.
Ed Tech Standard 6: Use telecommunications efficiently and effectively to access remote information and communicate with others in support of direct and independent learning and for pursuit of personal interests.

ISTE- Knowledge Constructor- Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.

I created a Thinglink about Healthcare Professionals to kickstart a discussion about Healthcare and how it works in our community. This is a good way to start a discussion and get the students thinking about different healthcare jobs and how they effect our community.  I think it is important for children to know about the different healthcare professionals we have in our community and how they can help.  I would consider using this in my classroom but I also think there are better programs that I have learned about this semester that I would use before using ThingLink, I think some of the other programs I have tried out and learned with are more effective and interactive than this one.

StoryBird

1st grade Reading Literature Standard 3: Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.

Ed Tech Standard 8- Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

ISTE- Creative Communicator- Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.

This StoryBird is to teach kids how to recognize and describe characters, settings, and major events in a story.  After reading this story as a class I thought as a class we could brainstorm details of the book and describe characters, settings, and major events in the story.  After discussing this book we could move on to other stories and they could work on finding details from those as well.  I don't know that I would use StoryBird in my class when I could use regular books and other stories.  I liked playing around with it, and it might be a good way for older grades to test their creativity and make their own story, but I think for the young first graders I would not introduce them to this quite yet.  This could be a good tool for the kids to create their own stories for different projects, but i still feel like maybe it is something that could be introduced when the are a bit older and have more control and awareness of the internet.

Google Doc

1st grade Math Standard 1.NBT.2.- Understand that the two digits of a two-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones. Understand the following as special cases
  • 10 can be thought of as a bundle of ten ones, called a "ten."
  • The numbers from 11 to 19 are composed of a ten and one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine ones.
  • The numbers 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 refer to one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine tens (and 0 ones).
I enjoyed creating a Google Doc to teach place values. I feel like the younger grades do well with coloring and hands on activities and I think worksheets are a good way to get them in the habit of school work.  I think the worksheet will help them understand the idea of place values and it will give them the foundation they need to continue on in math. I would clearly use Google Doc in my classroom because I think it is convenient and easy to use to make worksheets for my students and letters for my parents, etc.

EDpuzzle

5th grade Science Standard 2: Students will understand that volcanoes, earthquakes, uplift, weathering, and erosion reshape Earth's surface.

Objective 2: Explain how volcanoes, earthquakes, and uplift affect Earth’s surface.
  • Identify specific geological features created by volcanoes, earthquakes, and uplift.
  • Give examples of different landforms that are formed by volcanoes, earthquakes, and uplift (e.g., mountains, valleys, new lakes, canyons).
  • Describe how volcanoes, earthquakes, and uplift change landforms.
  • Cite examples of how technology is used to predict volcanoes and earthquakes.
Ed Tech Standard 5: Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

ISTE- Empowered Learner: Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.

I had a lot of fun creating an EDpuzzle video about Volcanoes- I enjoyed the process and I think this is definitely a program that I will use in my classroom.  I feel like this is something that will hold the attention of the students and teach them at the same time.  My video was introducing volcanoes and focusing on the beginning of the. I think it would be fun to allow the students to create their own video after learning more about volcanoes and earthquakes to show me how much they actually learned.  This could be a fun way to get them to learn how to present in from of other people and it can give them a chance to use their imagination and the facts in front of them and create an individual project.

Prezi

3rd Grade Health Standard 6:  The students will understand how a healthy diet and exercise can increase the likelihood of physical and mental wellness.
Objective 1: Compare personal eating habits with a balanced diet.
  • Record daily food intake.
  • Determine a balanced diet based on the Food Guide Pyramid.
Objective 2: Identify nutrient groups and the key functions of each.
  • Identify nutrient groups; i. e. , proteins, fats, water, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals.
  • Name foods rich in key nutrients.
  • Define the functions of basic nutrient groups.
Objective 3: Examine the dangers of dysfunctional eating.

  • Identify common reasons for dieting; e. g., health, peer pressure, unhappy with looks and/or size, weight loss.
  • Predict the effect fad diets may have on health.
Objective 3: Assess personal fitness level.
  • Measure heart rate.
  • Record the results of participation in aerobic, strength, endurance, and flexibility testing.
Ed Tech Standard 5:Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

ISTE: Empowered Learner- Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.

I created a Prezi presentation to be a part of a discussion about health and nutrition.  This would be the first lesson of a series of health lessons.  I thought this would be a fun way to learn about nutrition and then the students could work together in small groups and come up with their own presentation about nutrition.  I feel like nutrition can be pushed aside as "less important" lately and I feel like with technology lately children have gotten lazy, so this would be a good way to teach them that a healthy diet and regular exercise is very important for them to get i the habit of doing now.

Tiki-Toki

4th Grade Social Studies Standard 2-Students will understand how Utah's history has been shaped by many diverse people, events, and ideas.
Objective 1- Describe the historical and current impact of various cultural groups on Utah.
  • Chart the routes that diverse cultural groups took from their places of origin to Utah, using maps and other resources.
  • Explore points of view about life in Utah from a variety of cultural groups using primary source documents.
  • Explore cultural influences from various groups found in Utah today (e.g. food, music, religion, dress, festivals).
  • Identify and describe leaders from various cultures who exemplify outstanding character and life skills.
  • Explain the importance of preserving cultural prehistory and history, including archaeological sites and other historic sites and artifacts.
Objective 2- Describe ways that Utah has changed over time.
  • Identify key events and trends in Utah history and their significance (e.g. American Indian settlement, European exploration, Mormon settlement, westward expansion, American Indian relocation, statehood, development of industry, World War I and II).
  • Compare the experiences faced by today's immigrants with those faced by immigrants in Utah's history.
Objective 3- Investigate the development of the economy in Utah.
  • Explain the relationship between supply and demand.
  • Describe the role of producers and consumers.
  • Identify examples of producers and consumers in the local community.
  • Research the development of Utah's economy over time.
  • Identify the factors which bring about economic changes (e.g. natural resource development, new technologies, new market development, globalization, global conflicts, education).
  • Examine how economic development affects communities (e.g. dams, sports, tourism, power plants, mining, etc.).

Ed Tech Standard 6- Use telecommunications efficiently and effectively to access remote information and communicate with others in support of direct and independent learning and for pursuit of personal interests.

ISTE Global Collaborator- Students use digital tools to broaden their perspectives and enrich their learning by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams locally and globally.

I created a timeline on Tiki-Toki for an intro to the lesson about Utah History.  After this lesson it would be the student's turn to create a timeline or slideshow of some sort doing a report about something in Utah's history that they think has helped make Utah the state is is today.  I think this would be a fun way to learn about different events in Utah's history.  I chose not to "complete" my timeline with a lot of extra facts and pictures about each event because I thought this would be a good was to "kickstart" the project for the students and let them use their resources to find the details about the events they choose to work on.

See the Timeline here:

Animoto

2nd Grade Science Standard 2- Earth and Space Science. Students will gain an understanding of Earth and Space Science through the study of earth materials, celestial movement, and weather.

Objective 1- Describe the characteristics of different rocks.
  • Explain how smaller rocks come from the breakage and weathering of larger rocks.
  • Describe rocks in terms of their parts (e.g. crystals, grains, cement).
  • Sort rocks based upon color, hardness, texture, layering, particle size and type (i.e. igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary).
Objective 2- Observe and record recognizable objects and patterns in the night sky.
  • Observe, describe, and record patterns in the appearance and apparent motion of the moon in the night sky.
  • Observe and describe the number, arrangement and color/brightness of stars in the night sky.
Objective 3- Observe, describe, and measure seasonal weather patterns and local variations.
  • Compare and contrast the seasonal weather patterns during the school year.
  • Analyze and interpret data such as temperatures in different locations and different times.
Ed Tech Standard 8- Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

ISTE- Computational Thinker- Students develop and employ strategies for understanding and solving problems in ways that leverage the power of technological methods to develop and test solutions.

I chose to make an Animoto video about weather and the elements of it. This is the beginning of the lessons to fully teach this standard.  I had the thought of using this video and then having the students track the weather for a length of time and then make their own video based on their findings from their tracking.  I would consider using this as a tool in my classroom, but I would probably try to find a different tool for the students, while it was fun making the movie, I feel like i could find a different program that I like better.

Mind Mapping

2nd Grade Language Arts Standard 1- Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
Ed Tech 8- Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.
ISTE- Innovative Designer- Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions.

I chose to make a mind map of the book Charlotte's Web as an effective way to show my class a way to answer the detail questions, who, what, when, where, why, and how about a book. The program I used was a free program and very easy to use and create different mind maps, the downside of the program I used was that you couldn't add pictures, but all of the other programs I came across had a fee to add, pictures, which I don't like.  If I was not able to find a program that would allow us to add pictures for free then I would just use this free version and then print them and have the students cut out pictures they want to add to their mind map.  This mind map points out the main characters in the book and important events answering the questions, who, what, where, when, why and how.

Google Slides

2nd grade Social Studies Standard 2-(Citizenship): Students will recognize and practice civic responsibility in the community, state, and nation.
Objective 1- Examine civic responsibility and demonstrate good citizenship.
  • Describe characteristics of being a good citizen through the examples of historic figures and ordinary citizens.
  • Explain the benefits of being a U.S. citizen (e.g., responsibilities, freedoms, opportunities, and the importance of voting in free elections).
  • Identify and participate in a local civic activity. (e.g. community cleanup, recycling, walkathons, voting).
  • Identify state and national activities (e.g., voting, Pledge of Allegiance, holidays).
Objective 2- Identify individuals within the school community and how they contribute to the school's success.
  • Identify the roles that people have in the school and explain the importance of each member.
  • Demonstrate respect for the school and the school community.
Objective 3- Investigate and show how communities, state, and nation are united by symbols that represent citizenship in our nation.
  • Explain the significance of various community, state, and national celebrations (e.g., Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Thanksgiving).
  • Identify community and state symbols, documents and landmarks (e.g., city hall, county courthouse, state capitol, Utah State Constitution, flag, holidays).
  • Identify and explain the significance of various national symbols, documents, and landmarks (e.g., Declaration of Independence, Constitution, flag, Pledge of Allegiance, national monuments, national capitol building).
Ed Tech Standard 5- Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.
ISTE-  Innovative Designer- Students use a variety of technologies within a design process to identify and solve problems by creating new, useful or imaginative solutions.

The google slides I made was to focus on people in the school who with the successes of the school.  This is a fun way to have a lesson as well as getting the message of the beginning phases of the common core standard taught.  I think giving them a short homework assignment as well as an in-class group assignment can be a good way for the students to apply both technology and basic writing skills into their education.  I think it is so important for the young kids to learn about people in their school, community, state, and country who have jobs to help us be a safe and successful place.

Newsletter to Parents

5th grade Fine Arts Create Standard 5- Creating a character
Ed Tech 7- Use telecommunications and on-line resources (e.g., email, online discussions, web environments) to participate in collaborative problem-solving activities to develop solutions or products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.
ISTE Empowered Learner-Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the learning sciences.
I have created a newsletter to send home to the parents in my classroom.  I wanted to thank them for the hard work they have put in as their students have been working "overtime" on the current project.   I have the idea that at the end of this project the students could perform their characters, almost like a Wax Museum set up, this would be a fun way for them to show their parents their finished project and the different medias they have used for this project.  I would love to have a regular newsletter going home to my parents so that they know what our class is doing.  I am a huge supporter of regular note going home to parents so they know what their kids are doing at school and I think a newsletter is a good way to do a general overview for all of the students and their parents.

Roald Dahl Flyer

I loved making the flyer of Roald Dahl and I think it would be fun to do a spotlight on a new author each month in my classroom. I think this is a good way to introduce new books and genres of books to the students. Below is a link to the flyer to introduce the Author of the month-- the students will receive additional information about him each day for the spotlight month.

Google Forms

I really enjoyed making a quiz on Google forms. I think this is a really fun way to test kids on what they have learned at the end of a unit or lesson. I think it is a fun way for kids to be quizzed, instead of the regular paper and pencil kind of way. I feel like it could help the students concentrate better and it can be less stressful for them to use a computer then to just sit at a desk with a paper and pencil. I chose to create a quiz for the UEN Standard 2 for 3rd grade social studies.

Pinterest Board

I wanted to find some good ideas that can help me teach 3rd graders how to identify character traits and details in texts (Language Arts Standard 3). I also wanted to find ways to connect the literature standards of Common Core with technology (Ed Tech Standard 5). Our kids today are adapting to having technology all around them, it makes sense to make sure teachers implement the use of technology in lessons as well.  I hope that the ideas I have found and added to my board can help my students meet these previous mentioned standards as well as the ISTE Standard Knowledge Constructor.  I made a Pinterest board with several teaching ideas for 3rd graders, and the fun part is all of the ideas I found can be changed and adapted to include smart boards or power points and even videos and apps.

Here is a link to my Pinterest Board
